 Ratan Tata is a renowned Indian industrialist, philanthropist, and former chairman of Tata Sons, the holding company of the Tata Group, India's largest conglomerate. He was born on December 28, 1937, in Mumbai, India, to a prominent Parsi family. The Tata family has long been associated with industry and philanthropy, and Ratan Tata is the great-grandson of Jamsetji Tata, the founder of the Tata Group.



Early Life and Education

Ratan Tata's parents, Naval Tata and Sooni Tata, separated when he was young, and he was raised by his grandmother, Lady Navajbai Tata. He attended the prestigious Campion School in Mumbai and later studied at the Cathedral and John Connon School. Afterward, he completed his B.S. in architecture from Cornell University in 1962 and later pursued the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School in 1975.

Career at Tata Group

Ratan Tata joined the Tata Group in 1962, working first with Tata Steel in Jamshedpur, where he gained hands-on experience on the shop floor. He took over as chairman of Tata Sons in 1991, succeeding J.R.D. Tata. Under his leadership, the Tata Group grew into a global powerhouse, with significant acquisitions including Tetley Tea, Corus Steel, and Jaguar Land Rover. His most notable achievement was the launch of the Tata Nano, the world's cheapest car, aimed at making vehicle ownership more accessible in India.

During his tenure, the Tata Group's revenue grew exponentially, and he was instrumental in transforming the company into a global brand. He stepped down as chairman of Tata Sons in 2012, handing over the reins to Cyrus Mistry, although Tata had to return briefly in 2016 to handle internal challenges within the group before Mistry’s removal.

Philanthropy

Ratan Tata is known for his humanitarian efforts and philanthropy, focusing on education, healthcare, and rural development. Under his guidance, Tata Trusts, which holds a majority of the shares of Tata Sons, has funded several educational and health institutions, both in India and abroad. One of his significant contributions includes a $50 million donation to Harvard Business School to establish an executive education center, named Tata Hall.
